News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Betty Swanson January 22, 2009 480-982-1110, Ext. 2011 Yavapai and Navajo History Discussed on February 2 ALS Lecture A century ago, most non-Indian residents of Arizona assumed that the Yavapais, Navajos, and other Native American people and their indigenous futures would soon disappear. Photographer Edward Curtis took countless images of what he called “The Vanishing Race.” On Monday evening, February 2, ASU Regent’s History Professor Peter Iverson will discuss the continuing histories of the Yavapai and Navajo people and how this did not come to happen, thanks to leaders such as Carlos Montezuma and members of the Dodge Family. Today, there are more Navajos than in 1908. In addition to teaching, Iverson is the author of several books including Dine: A History of the Navajos. Pre-sale individual tickets to Iverson’s lecture are currently available at the cost of $5.00 in the Community Services Office of the Apache Junction Unified School District located in the Administrative Building at the corner of Southern Ave. and Ironwood Drive. The lecture presentations are performed every Monday evening from January into April. Location is the Performing Arts Center (PAC) on the campus of Apache Junction High School, 2525 S. Ironwood Drive. Curtain rises at 7 p.m. Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard and Discover) are now being accepted and tickets can be purchased over the phone by calling 480-982-1110, ext. 2014, or by going online to http://www.ajusd.org and clicking on “PAC Tickets” at the bottom of the page. Tickets will also be available at the door for purchase by cash or credit card on the evening of the event at the PAC box office until sold out. Seating is on a first come, first served basis with the doors opening at 6 p.m. For more information, call 480-982-1110, ext. 2014. -30- Apache Junction Unified School District 1575 W. Simulator Provides Continuing Education Sixty-one school bus drivers logged over 700,000 miles last year transporting 3,600 students to and from school. All drivers must hold a CDL (Commercial Drivers License) with a school bus and passenger endorsements. This special license takes more than 40 hours to attain and must be completed under DPS (Department of Public Safety) certified trainers. To maintain their licenses, drivers must complete continuing education on an annual base. One new innovative ways to comply is by using a simulator. Simulators have in the past been used to train pilots; engineers even cement truck drivers and now school bus drivers. AJUSD’s drivers had the opportunity to “test drive” the simulator during recent 4-day training. Drivers took a refresher course via the simulator, on mirror usage, turning and backing up. The simulator looks feels and performs like a real bus but is of course, stationary. Housed in a 32’ trailer, the simulator operates with 4 plasma screens from 6 computers to provide a realistic 240-degree panoramic field of view. The driving simulator is an important part of the schools effort to provide continuing education. Simulator training helps improve school bus driving skills by allowing drivers the opportunity to practice their decision-making skills for routine driving techniques as well have the capability to create situations similar to those actually encountered on the road but that would be too dangerous to perform in the real world. Drivers can experience the consequences of making decisions based upon incomplete information and learn what actions should be taken when outcomes can be predicted. Simulators don’t replace on the road training but provide a bridge between classroom delivered instruction and the actual operation of a school bus. The simulator was provided to the District by the Arizona Risk Retention Trust. The Trust is a risk management organization that is dedicated to providing information on safety to Arizona’s schools and community colleges.

News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Betty Swanson January 22, 2009 480-982-1110, Ext. 2011 Rare photographic images and researched eyewitness accounts will be featured when Dr. Jay Van Orden presents a slide lecture on “Geronimo’s Surrender” as part of the Arizona Lecture Series on Monday evening, January 26 at 7 p.m. In March of 1886, two warring nation’s representatives – Geronimo the Apache and U.S. Army General George Crook - met at Canon de los Embudos near the Arizona-Mexico border to negotiate an end to the Apache Wars. This event is noted in history books because, with the final surrender of Geronimo, 350 years of Indian-White warfare in North America ended. Van Orden’s lecture provides new historical perspective to this chapter in history. Featured are slides showcasing the 1886 photographs of the meetings, the military camps, and stunning views of the Chiricahua Apache people taken by famed frontier photographer C.S. Fly. These photos are the only known photos of American Indians as “Enemy in the Field.” Pre-sale individual tickets to Van Orden’s lecture are currently available at the cost of $5.00 in the Community Services Office of the Apache Junction Unified School District located in the Administrative Building at the corner of Southern Ave. and Ironwood Drive. The lecture presentations are performed every Monday evening from January into April. Location is the Performing Arts Center (PAC) on the campus of Apache Junction High School, 2525 S. NEWS RELEASE January 15, 2009 480-982-1110, Ext. 2011 NJROTC Undergoes Inspection; Parade Attendance Asked Is there anyone who doesn’t love a parade? The public is invited to attend a ceremonial parade put on by the Apache Junction High School NJROTC unit as part of the formal on-site Area Managers Inspection scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 20 and 21. The parade will begin at 9:15 a.m. morning at Davis Football Field on the AJHS campus and is scheduled to last about 45 minutes. Attendees will be seated in the bleachers. The parade is just one part of the two-day annual inspection that is mandated for every NJROTC unit. The current year’s unit at Apache Junction High School is one of the largest in the state, with 110 cadets enrolled. According to Sr. Naval Science Instructor Major Bill Parker, these cadets are putting in extra effort to prepare because they want to retain their “Distinguished Unit” ranking. He added that two of this year’s cadets have already been awarded $180,000 college scholarships, but three more cadets are still under consideration. A favorable impression and a good inspection could improve their chances, he said. Parker said that part of the criteria for judging the parade is based on the attendance at the event, so they would welcome the support of the community.

Office of the Superintendent Gregory Wyman, Ed. D. News Release For immediate Release Contact: Betty Swanson January 14, 2009 480-982-1110, ext. 2011 Letter to the Editor from Project HELP Dear Editor, The nation’s serious economic downturn this fall made this holiday season a particularly challenging one for donors and assistance agencies alike. Like most community agencies, we entered the season with a little trepidation about whether some needs might have to go unmet. In the case of the community of Apache Junction, these fears were unfounded. I always have said, “The people in this community are the most giving anywhere. Show them a legitimate need and they respond wholeheartedly.” Numerous individuals, businesses, RV and Mobile Home Resort resident groups, AJUSD employees and local organizations all stepped forward and once again assisted Project HELP in assuring that nearly 500 children and their families had a joyous holiday season. On behalf of all of the many families aided, Project HELP, and myself, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank every donor and volunteer who was involved in this year’s effort. The attributes of generosity, kindness, caring and helping others are deeply rooted and still alive and well in Apache Junction. For all of this, we sincerely thank each and every one of you. Press Release For Information: Carol Shepherd January 15, 2009 480-982-1110 ext. 2012 Special People Classified Employee of the Month Chris Hamon Chris Hamon has been invaluable in the AJHS library for the past four years. Besides working at volleyball and wrestling matches, Chris holds down the front desk in the library and greets every student who enters. She collects passes and keeps track of who comes and goes. She checks books in and out, prepares books for circulation, repairs overhead projectors, helps students with computer problems, repairs computers, helps students find books, and finds time to smile. She schedules all the computer labs and helps keep them up and running. She keeps everything in the library neat except Miss Weaver’s office, which she won’t touch. Without her, the AJHS library would not run as smoothly as it does. Volunteer of the Month Jane Hayes Jane Hayes, our volunteer extraordinaire, is unable to attend because of the early arrival of a new grandchild. This is the second year Jane has volunteered in the AJHS library and we don’t know how we could manage without her. She does everything from straightening out the bookshelves to covering books and covering the front desk when we are called away. She helps students find books and also donates books to the library. She is a treasure, and we are very fortunate she found us. Certified Employee of the Month Scott Shields Mr. Scott Shields is a tireless worker. He puts in countless hours upon his already busy schedule of teaching by fulfilling his duties as department chair. He is a great facilitator at English department meetings and a great liaison between the department and the administration. He is extremely knowledgeable about subject matter and takes true pride in his subject. He is an all-around good guy who works well with others, is likable, intelligent, and someone who the English department can rely on. Apache Junction Unified School District 1575 W. Jan. 13 Open House for New AJHS Learning Center Prior to the Governing Board meeting on Tuesday evening, January 13, the Apache Junction Unified School District will host an Open House to showcase the new Science and Math Learning Center that has been completed and is now in use on the north end of the Apache Junction High School campus. The new Learning Center is similar in design to the South Learning Center building that opened in 2006. The addition of these two learning centers has increased the student capacity of the AJHS campus by approximately 500 students. The new building encompasses 38,380 sq. feet under roof and is comprised of a center learning mall, 14 classrooms, and three science labs. Technologically, it is state of the art with two wireless computer/technology labs. Cost of the North Learning Center was approximately $9 million with the State Facilities Board providing more than $6 million dollars of that cost. The AJUSD share of the cost was financed with bond funds authorized in the 2004 bond election. Current plans are that this building will be the district’s last major construction project financed by that authorization. -30-

January 8, 2009 480-982-1110, Ext. 2011 Parent Help Available On-line The new Technology Portal offered by Apache Junction Unified School District gives parents a valuable tool to become more involved parents in the educational process. The Technology Portal link is the pathway and is located at the bottom right of the district’s home page at http://www.ajusd.org. The Technology portal is part of the district’s long-range technology plan. The portal will address the goal of “promoting the use of technology to improve parental communication and involvement,” according to Jon Castlehano, Director of Technology for the District. The resources available through the portal are divided categorically into those for Parents, Students and Teachers. Initially parents will have access to: “Gradebook Wizard” and “Accelerated Reading Booklists” for different grade levels. “World Book Encyclopedia Online” and “Study Island” academic exercises will also be available to students and parents. Information on how to access and use this unique education link was sent home with report cards this week to the parents of children in grades K-5. Parents are asked to check “backpacks” if they haven’t seen the instructions yet. The same information is available for students in middle and high school in the school offices and parents are encouraged to stop by and pick it up. Use of a password is necessary to retain the confidentiality of student’s grades and must be picked up in person. In addition to student grades now available on Grade Wizard, parents will soon be able to access classroom information, news and messages, schedules, handouts, and homework assignments. Parents can now check grades for themselves and soon they will be able to make sure that their children have completed all of the homework assigned. Help is also available in areas where students need more academic practice to grasp a concept. The appropriate practice exercises are available in Study Island. These tools for success are all available on line at http://www.ajusd.org. Parents are urged to get involved and try it out. -30-

News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Betty Swanson January 7, 2009 480-982-1110, Ext. 2011 Story of the Apache Kid Told by Paul Machula for ALS On Monday evening, Jan. 19, historian and teacher Paul Machula will tell the complex and mysterious story of the Apache Kid, as part of the 2009 Arizona Lecture Series put on by the Apache Junction Unified School District. Machula calls the Apache Kid “one of the greatest enigmas in American history” - a man whose life was full of incredible circumstances and great tragedy. Almost all of the Kid’s story took place in the Globe/Miami/ San Carlos area at the foot of the Pinal Mountains in the late 1800s. Integral to the saga is the clash of cultures during that time which greatly influenced the unfolding of the Apache Kid’s life. Was he a renegade or a victim? Machula will share his own personal insights into this question. Paul Machula is a native of the Globe/Miami area and has taken a keen interest in the Apache Kid since childhood. Much of his presentation comes from original records’ research and interviews he has conducted with descendants of people personally involved in the saga. Pre-sale individual tickets to this lecture at the cost of $5.00, as well as Season Tickets that for $50 are still a bargain, are available in the Community Services Office of the Apache Junction Unified School District located in the Administrative Building at the corner of Southern Ave. and Ironwood Drive. The ALS lecture presentations are performed every Monday evening from January into April. Location is the Performing Arts Center (PAC) on the campus of Apache Junction High School, 2525 S. Ironwood Drive. Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard and Discover) are now being accepted and tickets can be purchased over the phone by calling 480-982-1110, ext. 2014, or by going online to http://www.ajusd.org and clicking on “PAC Tickets” at the bottom of the page. Tickets will also be available at the door on the evening of the event at the PAC box office until sold out. Seating is on a first come, first served basis with the doors opening at 6 p.m. Curtain rises at 7 p.m. For more information, call 480-982-1110, ext. 2014. -30-
