Residents of Freedom Plaza Retirement Community, Casa del Rio and The Inn at Freedom Plaza honored 16 employees at The Plaza del Rio Foundation’s Spring 2010 Scholarship Awards.
Executive Director of Freedom Plaza, Michael Oliver, welcomed the 16 scholarship recipients, their family members and numerous residents to the semi-annual event.
President of The Plaza del Rio Foundation Scholarship Committee, Robert Franklin, introduced the Spring 2010 co-chairperson, Patricia Menees, and members Virginia Faux, Barbara Forrest, Mary Ricewasser and Gloria Skinner. Co-chairperson Jacqueline Reber heads the Fall 2010 Scholarship Fund.
Committee members presented 16 employees with a total of $17,050 in resident contributions donated to The William T. and Laura Lou Riggs Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Spring 2010 scholars include: Freedom Plaza dining services staff Robert Araujo, Jose Canales, Tricianne Daggett, Kayla Fields, Erin Gradel, Nicole Rosa, Angelica Schwengler and Katie Watkins; Casa del Rio dining services staff David Elliott, Kevin Schutte and Justice Reinhart; Freedom Plaza health services, Myles Attryde and Joseph Hernandez; and Plaza del Rio Care Center’s Sheila Brumfield, Jamie Esposito and Jennifer Fischer.
“The scholarship began in 1997 with one single award,” recalled co-chairman Patricia Menees. “For the Spring 2010, a total of $17,050 was awarded to 16 employees. Kudos to the residents that contribute to the Scholarship Fund.”
“I’ve worked with The Plaza del Rio Foundation for more than two years,” said Gloria Skinner. “Being a member of this committee and presenting these awards is among the most rewarding things I have done.”
The scholars expressed their gratitude to the residents in the audience for their generous Scholarship Fund contributions.
“This helps a lot with paying for college,” said David Elliott, a Glendale Community College student.
“It’s a blessing to work somewhere where you’re cared about so much,” said Nicole Rosa, a Glendale Community College student.
