Three Cocopah Teams did an outstanding job at the Arizona Future Cities Competition on February 23rd, 2010.  Over 100 teams competed and were required to submit an essay, city narrative, a computer model, scaled model, display boards and present their city to a panel of engineers.

Joey Horowitz, Eric Peshkin and Benjamin Steen took first place.  The will represent the Arizona Region at the National Future City Competition in Washington, DC in February.  The also won Best Fire-Safe Design, Best Multimodal Transportation System and Public Choice vote for best City.

The team of Adam Abrams, Alex Dahlmann and Nikolas Kirstein took the award for Best Environmentally Friendly City and the award for Best Future Transportation System.

Nate Cooper, Adam Hays and Lilly Weyers brought home four more awards for Cocopah.  Their awards included Best Presentation, Livable Communities, Innovative Use of Infrastructure and the Rich Goeway Community Awareness award.

The students received awards and medals.  They were featured on the Monday morning announcements and shared their experiences, awards and wonderful cities with the entire student body.

On January 26th, a special speaker from the notMYkid non-profit organization spoke to the entire student body about the negative effects of bullying.  The speaker shared his personal experiences and offered solutions and ideas for dealing with the issue of bullying.  A question and answer forum took place at the end of the presentation.

On January 30th, Service Learning students will host a party at the Via Linda Senior Center.  The party, “Dog Days”, is a party for seniors and their best friend, their dog.  Students will be facilitating games, contests and various other events for both the seniors and their dogs.  Refreshments and snacks will be served by the students.

A group of Cocopah Service Learning Students have committed to participating in Horsesense, a five week program held at MacDonald’s Ranch in North Scottsdale.  The program allows fourth grade students to participate in an equestrian riding camp and to boost their self esteem.  The Cocopah students will each be partnered with a fourth grader and will spend four hours each Saturday with them at the ranch.

Cocopah students and their families have stepped up to support the victims of the Haiti earthquake.  On January 29th, students will bring in their spare change (or dollars/checks) to their first period teacher.  All monies will be donated to the American Red Cross International Relief Fund.  The class that brings in the most money will win a prize.  Administrators and teachers have agreed to participate in a hot wings challenge if certain levels of giving are reached.

Service Learning student, Cole St. John, is partnering with Sports Chalet and Soles4Souls to lend a helping hand to the citizens of Haiti.    Shoes will be collected through January 29th at Cocopah and sent as quickly as possible to Haiti.
