Name: Kathy Harris

Where I live: Paradise Valley

When & why I moved here: We moved here in 1973 because it was far from Ohio and we thought it would be “fun” and “new.” It was both.

What I like most about living here: This is where my “grown up” roots and most wonderful friends are.

My favorite time of the year is: Those two days between summer and summer again when you can wear winter clothes.

Challenges of living here: Trying not to buy more than the two days worth of winter clothes.

Activities I enjoy: Right now, co-chairing The Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation’s Honor Ball for 2009 has been the greatest joy and privilege I can imagine. The ball benefits Scottsdale Healthcare’s outreach programs and will take place on Jan. 31. For more details, call 480-882-4510.

Clubs/organizations I’m involved in: In addition to co-chairing The Honor Ball, I’m involved in Paradise Valley Country Club and Women In Philanthropy.

My favorite charity and why it deserves support from others: Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation is my favorite charity because it is our community hospital and we want it to be the best place for our family and friends in the event that they need medical attention. There are also countless families right here in our own backyards who are uninsured or underinsured and desperately need the services we can provide for them because of proceeds from The Honor Ball.
.
My No. 1 suggestion to new residents looking for ways to get involved in their community: Get involved in some philanthropic endeavor that touches your heart – whatever it is. You will definitely meet the most wonderful, generous, thoughtful, good people in town. You’ll also be helping people in the process. It’s a win/win!

If I had four hours with absolutely nothing to do on a Saturday, here’s how I would spend it: I’d be playing golf with my best buddies or just spending time doing something together.

Things you’ve personally done this past year that has benefited someone outside your immediate household?: I have been involved in several very worthy philanthropic endeavors – both with my time and my dollars; I try to give what I can when I can to causes that are meaningful to me.

If you were mayor, what one thing would you do to make Paradise Valley a better place to live? I would change the ridiculous speed limit on McDonald Drive.

My family: Doesn’t need their mom as much as she may need them some days.

What I do: Right now, all of my efforts are focused on Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation. After Jan. 31, when I am no longer the co-chair of The Honor Ball, I’ll be knocking on doors.

People who are an inspiration: My grandmother was my hero and my inspiration in life. I can never remember a moment of her life when she did not behave like a lady. AND she made me a very conscientious and a good speller.

My advice to today’s youth: If only it didn’t take you so long to figure out how smart your mom and dad are. Try listening with an open mind and an open heart.

Name: Pam Ward

Where I live: Paradise Valley

When & why I moved here: Moved here 22 years ago. My husband John started his plastic surgery practice here.

What I like most about living here: The weather mostly permits outdoor activities for my family. We enjoy taking hikes in the mountains. We are very active in the community and enjoy the very special friends we have grown up with and enjoy each day.

My favorite time of the year is:
Spring. It is still cool enough to hike on nearby mountain trails and be able to enjoy the beautiful Palo Verde Trees and wild flowers blooming.

Challenges of living here: Of course staying cool in the summertime and would also love to see a revitalization of city. I’m hoping the light-rail system will make this happen both for our community and businesses.

Clubs/organizations I’m involved in: This year my primary focus has been co-chairing the Honor Ball. Proceeds support the community health services initiatives and programs at Scottsdale Healthcare. The event takes place Jan. 31 at the Arizona Biltmore Spa and Resort. Tickets are available by calling 480-882-4510. Our main focus is improving the health and well–being of our community. I am also a devoted member of the Board of Visitors and Liberty Wildlife.

My No. 1 suggestion to new residents looking for ways to get involved in their community: It feels good to get out and become a volunteer in your community and Phoenix has so many wonderful charities to become a member no matter how much time you have. I think just reading the newspaper gives you insight on local programs available.

If I had four hours with absolutely nothing to do on a Saturday, here’s how I would spend it: I would definitely go for a hike and enjoy the sites and sounds of the dessert. I would then come home and enjoy a good book on my patio with a cup of tea.

Name three things you’ve personally done this past year that has benefited someone outside your immediate household?: No. 1: The numerous hours I have spent on planning the Honor ball. No. 2: Served on the grants committee for the Board of Visitors and helped distribute funds to women, children and the elderly in need. No. 3: In September and October I personally visited retailers in the Valley to sign them up for Care Card program. Funds went directly to Ryan House.

If you were mayor, what one thing would you do to make Paradise Valley a better place to live?: I would maintain the ambience of the town and the uniqueness of 1-acre lots. I would also manage the growth in a protective, friendly way.

My family: John Ward, plastic surgeon; John Martin Ward, financial officer for Western Athletic clubs in San Francisco; Anna Marie Ward, works for UCSF in brain cancer research and Harrison Ward graduate of Brophy this year and freshman at Stanford University.

What I do: Volunteer many hours for the Honor Ball. Manage a medical skin care clinic in my husband’s plastic surgery practice, the Paradise Valley Skin & Body Clinic.
Manage a family of young adults with creative talents and challenges.

People who are an inspiration: My husband’s two sisters Dianne and Bev. Both have always been strong supporters of community programs where they live. My husband John been so very supportive over all these years of my efforts in volunteerism both in spirit and financial.

My advice to today’s youth: Now is a good time with the unemployment rate to stay in school and make the most of your education. Find something you have a passion for and give as much energy as you can to make it happen.
