I have read complaints online and in various publications from East Mesa residents before and continue to hear concern from my area ( a county island ) here in the East Mesa area. Complaints about crime , drugs , and slow MCSO response , are frequent. But when someone like myself and my organization tries to offer assistance in the form of organizing a neighborhood watch and other types of assistance , people seem to shy away. It seems that alot of people recognize that there IS a problem in our area but are reluctant to take action.
I can give a couple of examples ; a few months ago , a manager of a local mobile home park , wrote to this very publication complaining of slow MCSO response time and crime in the park. I contacted the park on two different occassions and offered our neighborhood watch services and advice but the management and residents seemed unintersested and did not take us up on our offers of help.
Our neighborhood watch has been in operation for over 3 years and has had alot of success. We have managed to rid our area of over 13 drug-related households and are presently a drug-free neighborhood. We are proud of our success but would like to expand into adjacent areas to help other residents come to enjoy the benefits we now enjoy.
We recently started our expansion into a heavily crime and drug ridden area. We distrubuted over 100 fliers (over 4 blocks) in a area adjacent to our neighborhood. The fliers gave a information , reasons to join , time and place of the orientation meeting etc. Only TWO households showed up ! Amazing considering the countless complaints we have recieved from that area !
We will keep expanding to other streets but I definately have to say that we were sorely disappointed and hope that others in the area will show more interest. It took time and some of our precious limited funding to invite these residents to join us in the continued fight to reduce crime in this area.
I just want to say to people in the area ; quit complaining if you choose do do NOTHING about it !
