Summer is here, so welcome to triple digits and heat advisories. Low humidity and little cloud cover even have some desert plants looking stressed. Our last rainfall was March 23rd, but monsoon activity should start picking up soon – average start date is July 7th.  Shop for a rain gauge if you don’t have one as these storms are localized. Turn your irrigation off if you get at least ½-inch of rain. See our bonus tip below about grass removal to save water. These recommendations are for plants that are established in the landscape (in the ground about 2 years).

Lawn watering:
Summer grass (Bermuda) - once every 3 days
Overseeded cool season grass (rye) – grass dies out If trees and shrubs are on the same valve:
Desert Adapted - once every 14 days
High Water Use - once every 7 days
Tree watering:
Desert Adapted - once every 16 days
High Water Use - once every 8 days
Shrub watering:
Desert Adapted - once every 12 days
High Water Use - once every 5 days
Groundcover and vine watering:
Desert Adapted - once every 12 days
High Water Use - once every 4 days
Cacti and succulent watering - once every 21 days Annual & vegetable watering - once every 2-3 days

Note: These recommendations are a general guideline only and may need to be modified for your specific site conditions.

Bonus tips:
Summer is a great time to convert your grass to Xeriscape because it’s easiest to kill the grass when it is actively growing. Mesa has resources to help:
- Take our class on Sat. July 10 titled “Converting from Grass to Xeriscape to Save Water, Time & Money” as part of our Living Green workshop series. It will take place from 1:30 – 3 p.m. at Dobson Branch Library. The program will discuss how to remove grass and replace it with a beautiful desert-friendly landscape. More info at 480-644-4400.

- Learn more about Xeriscape at http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/arizona then click on “How To” under quick links.

**Reduce your landscape watering 30 to 50 percent by adjusting your irrigation each season.** “Landscape Watering by the Numbers: A Guide for the Arizona Desert” will help you determine how much water to apply and how long to run your system. Visit the interactive Web site or request a free copy of the booklet at http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/arizona
